From the Deep
It’s an old dream come true when Rued Langaard’s last completed work From the Deep for soloists, large choir and orchestra and organ will be performed publicly for the first time at Rued Langgaard Festival 2025.
By Esben Tange
The big orchestral concert at Rued Langgaard Festival 2025 ends with a bang. With quotes from the Catholic Mass of the Dead and a stormy beginning with screeching piccolo flutes “dreamt in Night Sleep” on December 3, 1950, the music has the character of a personal requiem for Rued Langgaard.
It is fascinating to imagine that Langgaard, who lived a few kilometers from the North Sea, chose a Breton legend as the motto for Fra Dybet , in which the bells of a city sunk in the sea are heard. Despite the nightmares and gloomy staging, Fra Dybet ends on a jubilant note with the text Mihi quoque spem dedisti – You have given me hope too.
With a total duration of around 8 explosive minutes, Fra Dybet is one of Langgaard’s most compressed works. Fortunately, the music is in the best hands when Michael Schønwandt returns to the Rued Langgaard Festival and leads the Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester and a large number of choir singers in Ribe Cathedral.
